I did an oil painting I really like a little while ago and I would like to frame it so I can hang it in my apartment. Whenever my parents get things framed, they get it done professionally, but I know that's pretty expensive. Is there a way I can do it myself and still have it look nice and protect the painting? What's the best (cheap) way to frame an oil painting?
My mother is an artist and always frames her own pieces. It's important to know that a frame will add to the overall aesthetic appeal of the piece if chosen correctly and may also help the canvas from bowing or warping over time. However, it's important to protect the painting from moisture and sunlight in order to extend its beauty.
If you want to try to frame it yourself, your best bet is to stop by a local craft store. Many places like Michael's carry framing kits that can show you step by step how to construct a frame and also provide all of the necessary materials. This way you can have a finished look without cutting and finishing the wood itself. What's the best (cheap) way to frame an oil painting?
A frame doesn't necessarily protect an oil painting as you don't put glass over oil. If your painting was done on canvass, I think just painting the sides a colour that picks up a colour in your painting can give it a nice finish without a frame. Otherwise you need a rounter and mitre box and stuff to finish a wood frame.
Frame shops are notoriously expensive.
Some art supply shops have ready made frames in standard sizes that you can choose a style .
Might find frame segments that you can use to fit your stretcher.
Unless you have access to a wood shop making your own %26amp; having it look good is harder than it seems.
Have gone all 3 ways %26amp; the pros do it best
Get it professionally done. It will look allot better and well worth the money.
