Help with oil painting on board?

I am experienced with painting on canvas, and would like to experiment painting on board. I need advice/help determining what kind of board to use. I heard untreated pressed masonite is good, but how do I know it's untreated? Where is a good place to purchase such materials? Home Depot? Lowes? Is there anything other advice that can accompany this question?Help with oil painting on board?
The folks at the hardware store can tell you which masonite is untreated. It's treated with oil that smells like creasote... you'll be able to smell the difference. Pressed hardwood panels are great too - they are smooth on both sides. But even the untreated wood needs to be sealed - keep in mind that Gesso is not a sealer, but PVA adhesive works great. You can apply gesso on top of that for a good safe painting surface.Help with oil painting on board?
Masonite would be a good support. You must prime it with acrylic primer before painting on it.

Any home improvement store will have it. Don't get any thinner than 1/4 inch. Try it first on a small piece, maybe scrap from the store to see how you like it. Usually economy is the reason people go to masonite for paint support.
