What is the best surface for oil painting?

cheap but good. especially if I'm planning on selling the artwork. What is the best surface for oil painting?
There are two surfaces that I would consider, Canvas or Masonite boards. They can be prepped the same way with gesso. One is Canvas which is light portable and considered the most desirable by collectors, masonite is a pressed board which is harder to transport and more heavier than canvas, but it does not expand as much as canvas with moisture and temperature changes so it is better for the paint in the long run. What is the best surface for oil painting?
It depends on what the finished piece is about. A beautiful portrait of a graceful dancer might look best on the finest linen. A rugged landscape full of rocks and trees with heavy bark might look great on the roughest, heaviest canvas you can find, maybe even sail cloth.

Experimentation is the best way to learn what you like to work with, and what gives you the results you want. Buy small pieces of each type of surface and try different techniques on it. Be sure to keep a careful journal of your work.

You can learn a lot about art materials by reading what art catalogs say about what various materials do. The websites of various manufacturers has a lot of information about what their materials do and how to use them. It's valuable reading.
Definitely canvas, masonite, plywood, and particle boards
