The best thing is Pelts Naphtha soap. It is a great alternative. It is practically harmless, it has a pleasant soapy odor. You can leave it on your brushes to keep them in shape when not painting. Also another great advantage if you stain your clothing with oils just wet the area rub on some soap and wash them and the stains will come off. What can I use to clean the oil paints off my brushes? Alternatives to turpentine if possible?
You can dip them in any kind of oil, (linseed, walnut, safflower, whatever) and wipe off the paint.
After that, a little detergent or soap will take off any residue.
