One of the things I can't stand about acrylic paint is that it dries so quickly. I've wondered recently if oil paint would be better for my style of painting. What do you like/dislike about oil paint? How long does it take to dry? Any help?Oil paint: its pros and cons?
I am biased against oil paint, so take my answer with a grain of salt.
I don't like having to use solvents to clean up with. Yes, I know that there are water miscible oil paints out there, but the odor factor is still an issue for me and my family. We are all sensitive to fumes, so oils are not an option. I am very conscious of the environmental factors of the art I do. I don't use acrylics because it's disposal would impact my septic system. House painting is doubly hard because I can't just wash brushes in the sink, same goes with art acrylics. But I digress. I would have to find somewhere to dispose of the solvents, or in the case of the water miscible oils, the water carrying the oil. Too much of a hassle for me.
There are mediums that will extend the open time for acrylics. Have you tried those? These links are to two of the products. There are brief descriptions.

Oil paint is a wonderful, lush, glowing medium that serves very different purposes than acrylic. Oil allows for lots of blending, the use of wonderful different mediums, and has a sheen and a glow that acrylic just does not. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE acrylic for its own reasons, but oil paint has such a long and beautiful history!
There are different ways to get oil paint to dry more quickly or slowly. At the very least, you can get it to form a film or a tacky surface in a few hours. Adding Japan drier, mineral spirits, and mediums like galkyd or liquin all increase drying time. Adding linseed, stand or other oils increases drying time.
I'd say buy some paint and some mediums and just enjoy experimenting!

I like acrylic paint because it does dry quickly. The reason don't like oil paint is because it takes a couple days to dry and I am impatient. When I work on a painting I want to keep going. But whatever your style of painting is then that should definitely be the determining factor for you.
