Can you put oil over latex paint?

Well....many opinions. I'll add mine. I just researched this EXTENSIVELY due to pre-existing problems on a job. I had always been told oil over latex was no problem, latex over oil was bad. However, the customer had painted oil over latex and it was peeling like a sunburn. I asked several different painting contractors that I sub out to, they all had different answers. I went online to the sites of most major paint manufacturers, etc. The consensus seems to be scuff sand, prime with oil/water base, then paint. It worked great for me.

Latex and Oil base paints have different expansion and contraction rates which causes them to crack and peel when one is placed over the other.





So unless you are going to keep the room or structure at a constant temperature and humidity, don't do it.

Yes, you can put oil over latex, you just can't put latex over oil because the oil repells the water, and the paint can't sink in.

id give it the once over with some fine sand paper then prime coat.
Painter over 20 years yes you can put oil over latex, but you cant put latex over oil go for if you wont to.
i wouldnt even attempt it without some sort of primer first...alcohol based primer like BIN
I must disagree with several responders. Latex paint expands and contracts much more than oil paint. If you put oil over latex, it will subsequently start flaking when the latex underneath it reacts to weather and humidity. You CAN put latex over oil, but that is not your situation.





As someone else suggested, confirm with a paint store. You do NOT want to see a new paint job start flaking on you in a year or so.
