Although most scholars now believe that the ancient Egyptian, Greek and roman artists probably used some sort of oil-based techniques, traditional art scholarship usually names Jan Van Eyck a Flemish painter of the 15th century as the developer (or re-discoverer) of the modern oil technique - complete with pigment mixing and varnish fixatives. This , at any rate is what Vasari says in his famous, ';Lives of Artists.';Who invent OIL PAINT?
