So i'm doing my gcse mock and i started off in acrylic but teachers feel easier/quicker to use oil paints. I've never used them but they say i paint in the technique you would if you were using them.
All I know about them is they take forever to dry and you don't use water, white spirit instead. Any advice, tips, information or anything would be appreciatedHow do I use oil paints?
As an experienced artist, I have painted many years with acrylics and oils. Oils are more stable, they dry without changing colors. Acrylics get darker when they dry. Oils have chemicals that help them dry faster and are more versatile. The only difference is that you will need a room with good ventilation to use them. I tried oils in my house and I did not feel good, I felt like I had allergies because of the fumes and smells. with acrylics you can use them anywhere and they have no such effects. You can have the same results with oils and acrylics when you learn the different qualities and limitations. I think it is not about which product you use but what is the result. Also the more tools you can use to get those results the better you will get.How do I use oil paints?
ya it take a while for the paint to dry so something. What I would do is to kinda split the paint into different section and work on the left upper corner one day and the right corner another day to aloud a few days for each area to dry. i know working with oil painting can some time get frustrating when you want your painting to get pretty detail and the oil paint like to blend more then level. The best idea if you can is to work on more then one painting at a time so you can give each of them a little time to dry and you can work on them level by level.
It's easier to use oil paint because you can paint over your mistakes. Use separate brushes for contrasting colors so you don't end up with grayish white or something. Use a lot of color for thick things and a small bit of color (rub around on the canvas) for thin appearances. Use varying brushstrokes but always use horizontal strokes for water (rivers, lakes, etc. ) unless you are drawing a waterfall. Lastly, try to copy exactly what you are drawing.
there are ways you can make art look certain ways, but to tell you the truth there are not any rules set in stone. I paint with oils with my fingers to do ulta blending, but it is a pain to get the paint off of my hands. Also, remember to dry your paintings in sunlight or bright light so that it does not leave a yellow tint.
Do some online research about using oil paints.
You have some of the info already...they are messier, need turpentine like products to clean brushes, palettes, and take a long time to dry.
Will smear if touched accidentally before dry.
If you get it on clothes, furniture, etc, very difficult to remove.
If you are enjoying using acrylics then keep using them.
