Painting over oil paint yes or no ?

Oil over oil is fine.





Acrylic directly over oil would only stay temporarily. Acrylic paint would eventually peel or flake off.

If you mean can you use acrylic artists' paint over artists' oil paint, yes. The oils must be thoroughly dry, meaning that is has been drying for a few years before you paint over it. If you don't want to have the oil painting showing through the acrylic do this:


sand the oil paint down thoroughly, so no texture shows or can be felt


use three or four coats of gesso, sanding well between each layer.


Now you can paint over it with acrylic.


Watercolor will not work over oils.

you could use oil paints over an oil painting, but the texture from older painting would show through, may be best to start anew, unless you were doing touch-ups, if you were using acrylics, those can be used sparingly, but would tend to crack or peel after awhile, but it can be used as mixed media,





if you meant for use on walls, you would want to scuff surface first before adding different type of paints, a primer can be used as well,

no,no,no.....The rule is Oil over acrylic... Acrylic first detail with oil. in time it will get messed up.
No, it will peel off and it's not good. Alot of people I've been renting houses from for years did this and it ticked me off.
What kind of paint are you using? Anything water based is probably a no
