Are oil paintings normally framed and protected by glass?
Thank you.Hi, Do I need to glass in an oil painting I just bought or just leave the painting uncovered in its frame?
Oil paintings are framed but not glassed. The glass can hold in gas %26amp; moisture and ruin the oil, also it obscures the texture of the painting from view.Hi, Do I need to glass in an oil painting I just bought or just leave the painting uncovered in its frame?
Works on paper are framed underglass. Oil or acrylic paintings on canvas are not. The latter are protected by varnish, not glass.
i would say frame the oil painting so when light does hit it that is doesnt fade the paint i just have a lot of artist in my family and the frame all art for protection hope this helps good luck
NO!
oil 'outgasses'
and beneath glass
will damage the canvass over time
a pro shop can help you keep it clean and safe
It really depends on how valuable it is - Valuable oil paintings are shown without glass but in a dust free, moisture controlled environment. If you cannot control the room around said painting you may want to try glass, but have it done by a very reputable framer...
Oil paintings are framed but with no glass.
(from an artist)
Oil paintings are not normally covered by glass. I would advise, however, that you hang the painting where it will not be exposed to sunlight because sunlight will cause it to fade. You may have problems with the painting if there are smokers in the house. Cigarette smoke will coat the painting in nicotine, tar, and other chemicals that are not good for it. Covering the painting will glass will help a bit because some of the airborne chemicals will stick to the glass rather than the painting, but because frames are not airtight, some will still end up coating the painting. This requires professional cleaning. The average person does not have the material, tools or training to clean paintings properly.
