Which medium is best to use with oil paints and?

what are the different effects we can get from Winsor %26amp; Newton Artists Picture Varnishes gloss,matt and satin.which would be the best effect.Which medium is best to use with oil paints and?
a good standard medium recipe is 321

3 parts linseed oil

2 parts English turpentine

1 part damar varnish

mix it and your good to go.

as for varnishing after its dry I just use straight damar. It is a gloss finish. Satin and matt are just damar with some wax in it. The thing I don't like about the matt and satin is that after dry they can be buffed (accidental contact with cloth, clothes, bumping into something) and will make gloss spots. Its all just a matter of aesthetics and what you want for your ';look';
