Any info, opinions, or links is GREATLY appreciated!I want to expand my horizon from traditional oil painting to oil pastels and don't know where to start?
Your opportunities are proportioned by where you are. If you are in a large city or a highly populated area, chances are there are many artists and art clubs all around you. Sometimes the clubs are very active, but very silent to the community. As you discover these organizations, you will find many artists who work in various mediums. Many of them will stir you in the right direction. This is the simplest way unless you are really interested in a more formal education in the art of pastels.I want to expand my horizon from traditional oil painting to oil pastels and don't know where to start?
Experiment with the medium.
It's as simple as going out and getting some oil pastels and pastel paper. :-) Since you're experiementing, you don't have to get the more expensive high end ones. I believe there should be packs under $5 you can purchase with a pretty good color palette.
The cool thing about oil pastels, is the way the soften when they come in contact w/ the heat from your fingers. I like the way they can be blended w/ finger pressure.
Since they contain oil, you can also thin them w/ turpatine as you do oil paint, but of course it has to be used more sparingly.
How about your local library.
Experimentation is a good start. You can check out some books at the library or take some classes. I use oils and pastels also. I took some college courses to learn the pastels.
